Car insurance question.

Hi ! I have a question re car insurance! Its a nightmare isnt it, I wish it was simple. After reading all the policies its doing my head in. I own our car so registered in my name, but my husband is going to need to become the main driver now. Alot of them won't insure because he doesnt 'own' the car. We are tight on money and am trying to find the right policy.
Does anyone have experience of Dial Direct?
They say that I can make Matt main driver and also transfer my ncd to him, which is great - but I want to make sure I make the right decision.
My other question in that my current insurers - Churchill only look at 5 years ncd. previously I was with Esure and had 7 years with them so now have 8 years no claims with churchill in between. If I send both documents to show I now have 8 - is this acceptable? or will they only accept Churchill?
I need to make decision quickly. I hope I don't sound daft, just trying to sort it out. Any advice would be appreciated...
Thanks

  • If I were you I would phone rather than do it on the internet because you can explain it then. We are with Ford Insure (you do not have to drive a Ford) and they are very helpful. We have two cars both of which have the log book in my husband's name and I an insured on both of them. I did have a car in my name but we sold that (we had three cars for about a month). We both had a car each then he bought another one and I sold mine.

For a long time, my OH and I drove the car registered to the other person. I insured the one in my name, he insured the one in his. We then named each other as the main driver on the policy. We never had any problem with this, and it was never queried.

I worked for Dial Direct (Aka Budget/Post Office/M&S/Homebase Insurance) till 7 months ago.

Yes, you are fine to give your No claims bonus to your partner on this policy, as long as you give your say so on the phone, or in writing.

HOWEVER: You cannot transfer the no claims bonus back into your name once you have transferred it to him (company policy, don't know if that is an industry standard).

With regards to the NCD from Churchill and E-Sure, make sure that you send a (very basically worded) letter with the proof of ncd, and that you staple them together...don't send the originals, whatever you do!!!

You can also hedge your bets by faxing them to 01733 845001, addressed "Fao Manager - Urgent!!!"

I'm not sure if I'm correctly understanding the circumstances, but if they are as I think, you don't need to do anything so complex.

If you own the car and it's registered to and insured by you, but your husband is about to become the main driver, then you can keep insuring it yourself and just specify that your husband is the main driver.

There's no need at all for the insurance to be in the name of the main driver as long as you specify who IS the main driver.

I think it would explain things a little better, if I said that in Dial Direct's policies, the NCD is in the regular driver's name, NOT the policyholders, so if she didn't transfer the ncd to him, he would have a policy based on 0 years ncd.

But Dial Direct are one of approximately ... one company who take that approach, and they are NOT the OP's current insurer.

In other words, she can take out insurance with virtually anyone other than Dial Direct doing it the way that I said.

Yes, I understand that, but the OP's question was with specific reference to Dial Direct, so I was just explaining their process, and pointing out some of the issues that she may not hear about if she gets a poor operator.
