  • K reg Micra? Does that mean it is the K10 model? They are so rare now these days. Someone will pay more than scrap value for that to restore.

Can get a daewoo Lacetti 05 reg for £1000 - £1500ish. Will be pretty reliable, sensible mileage, built from some vauxhall bits so plenty of spares if something does happen. I had a lanos which is the older model, and although naff to drive never let me down in 4 years. Might find a kalos too if you want something a little smaller, and they're decent cars. Just don't get a matiz, god awful rubbish ;)

Another possibility is an 05/06 Suzuki Alto. Never driven one so can't say how good it is, but if its half as good as the Swift then for £1500 its a bargain.

As mentioned it all depends on what you will be using the car for.
Age isn't so much of a worry and niether is mileage so long as the car has been looked after and has a record of being maintained regularly.
For the money i would personally buy the car out right. It is a buyers Market and if you are patient and think with your head you will get a decent car.
Also bear in mind the running costs (things like insurance, parts etc) cars can be picked up for very little money but maintaining them can be very expensive.

    Good luck in your search.

Sorry but you won't find a 04/05 car for £1,500.

I disagree. I sold my 2004 04 plate Mondeo for £1000. Was on the high mileage side but well maintained, fault free with full dealer service history.

On Ebay there were plenty for under £1500.

I have no idea, it doea have sports drive, will need to have a look

Thanks for the different advice, I use the car for mostly running me and 2 kdis about town, don't need something brand new but from a purely selfish point of view would like something a little newer than what I have (though I am finding it hard to break away from my normal if it aint broke don't fix it mentality).

Want something with lowish road tax and a half decent mpg, was looking at this http://www.z-carsales.co.uk/used_car_peugeot_307_hatchback_399.htm

I know the garage, although it looks a little tacky they have been around for a while and I know people who have bough there and been happy, any thoughts?

    2. Does it make more sense to buy an old car (was thinking of spending about £3,000 - so maybe 04/05) and own outright or to take finance so you can effectively lease car and get a new one every few years not pay mot's etc.

    Both can make sense.

If you want a new-ish car and protection from large unexpected bills, PCP or leasing can work. You just come to view a car as a service, not a possession.

If you want the absolute cheapest car and are willing to risk unexpected bills, you'll probably save money buying an older car.

Pay your money, take your choice.

My grandad had one of these in the 90s. I wouldn't mind one myself now as a cheap runaround.
