Log burner fiited incorrectly...fire last night please help.

Hi i am wondering if anybody can help us, last April we used a company to get a log burner they charged us for the bruner and arranged for the fitter (who they advised was fully qualified etc) to fit it and advised us to give him £250 cash (we have invoice to show this). It was fitted and we waited for our certificate, this never came and after many calls to the shop and trips they get fobbing me off saying he had gone awol and not employed by them anymore and they are having lost of problems with him.

Anyway last night we had a chimney fire, we were woke up at 2.30am by our smoke alarms, house was full of smoke, we grabbed baby and son and called fire brigade. Fire brigade took log burner out and said the flu pipe was fat to short and it was an accident waiting to happen, they are giving statement to this affect.

We have some damaged bits and bobs but more importantly we are all okay, however we have breathed in smoke in our sleep. Our baby was at a&e the night before as she has a chest infection so this has been the weekend from hell! The other three of us have asthma. The house stinks of smoke after all day clenaing.

Just wondered where we stand as even if shop agree to reinstall i wouldnt trust them now but they need to know and we are really shaken and angry!

Hi: check here to see if your 'installer' is HETAS registered....if he is, file a complaint...if he isn't, contact your LABC and Trading Standards in both cases.

Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)
  • Thanks the company is not coming up and i only know his name so looks like its trading standards and LABC. thanks again

Contact your house insurers. they will arrange for any damage to be rectified and will undertake any cleaning that is necessary (their contractors use a ramge of cleaners and chemicals that neutralise the effects of smoke).

Your insurers will then pursue negligence claims on yopur behalf and are equipped to deal with this and it will be a lot less stressful than you doing it.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • oh right i hadnt thought of this, (i knew i could claim on insurance but 1, without certificate wondered where is stood and 2. didnt want to claim and use no claims discount as thought it should be their insurance.)

Will speak to them and see how this works.

    Thanks

As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.

Only a board guide can do that, by multiple posting people reply only to find someone else has answered with possibly the same information elsewhere and also it is against forum rules.
Forum users mustn't post the same forum post more than once on the forum (the only exception is members of the MSE Team; when needed)
