missed calls from 01799

yesterday i was plagued by calls from an 01799 number. whenever i called it back all i heard was a beep. it wasnt a fax machine.
i only called it back twice.
anyone know if this is a scam although i believe 01799 is probably a land line.

I had this too - said I had a message and I should ring the number. I didn't as it seemed dodgy. Anyone know what this is?0

Quick google on 01799 tel numbers tells me that it is an Essex landline tel no. As always, I maintain if it was important they will call again .0
