Spoken to BG this morning. They are coming to change the meter and send it away for testing, if they find it faulty they will clear the high bill, if they don't , I'm liable for the cost which is running at £30 per day and they said they had hardly ever heard of a faulty meter , which is slightly worrying

    ...

I have turned the gas off at the stop tap and yes, it's still showing gas usage with the stop tap off , something like 15 cubic mtrs in 5 hrs. Just in case the meter is found "checked and satis" I've video'd the meter showing gas usage with the stop tap clearly off and I've reported the gas usage with stop tap closed to BG.

Can anybody thing of anything else I could do in case this goes to dispute ?
    Many thanks
OK, if this is the incoming gas !!!!, you need to be present when the meter is changed, just to be sure that the !!!! is really turning the gas off. I would assume it is.

Take your own notes of the serial number of the gas meter. Ideally, I would want BG to leave the gas meter in place abut with a check meter in series. This can be done for electricity meters, but I am not sure about gas meters.

    edit: !!!! = cock

yes, with the stop tap off the gas was definitely off. I tried the cooker gas hob and no gas was coming out.

With that kind of usage showing, it should be easy to see something being recorded in a matter of minutes. When the engineer comes to change it, get him to confirm to you that it is recording usage with the gas turned off. Also get his details.
Should they then test it and find nothing wrong, you might be able to use his confirmation that there was a problem.

Yes I thought of doing that, thanks. I thought I might print out a form and get him/her to sign it before anything is removed. Just looked at our bill on line and it has gone from £120 in credit a couple of days ago to £540 in debit now !!, so the debt is building up fast !!
  • Hopefully my smart meter problem might soon be resolved. It took a few phone calls, but once I'd spoken to the BG supervisor at the smart team, I had an emergency smart meter engineer round within 2 hrs.

He removed the meter and couldn't believe his eyes when the meter was still showing very heavy gas flow, !even when disconnected and lying on our kitchen table !!

BG should shortly be reducing my bill from £500 debit back to about £100 in credit.
So far, I'm happy with BG's response.

SO IF ANYBODY IS EVER TOLD BY THEIR SUPPLIER THAT SMART METERS NEVER GO WRONG, I HAVE THE PROOF !
