Outdoor Tap
I have a out side tap fitted like the one above, which has now got a leak where the screw on connecter piece fits the mains water pipe.
Can i use a spare washing machine hose which has the same fitting at the end?
instead of having to buy another whole kit just for the hose part.
We are getting a water meter fitted in a couple of months, do we need permission to have a out side tap from 'water company', do you get charge more just for having one installed out side?
Thanks advance

You do not need permission to have an outside tap, but do get one properly connected if you are having a meter. My brother has one, went away for the weekend and found that the connection to his garden tap had come apart, effectively leaving the tap running full into the garden for quite some time. That was an expensive weekend!

I doubt you need a new pipe, turn thew water off and undo the pipe and put some Ptfe tape on or a new washer if there's one there and tighten up again.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

The one in a kit will be frost-proof down to a ridiculous amount like -27degrees but the washing machine one won't withstand any sort of frost, leaving you at risk of burstsYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0 -

it split some how at the screw part, notice water leaking and went to change the washer and notice the split, dont know if the bad cold weather we had caused it.0 -
If it was a cheap bibtap in the first place there may have been a crack in the casting which split when it was overtightened.buckrogers wrote: »it split some how at the screw part, notice water leaking and went to change the washer and notice the split, dont know if the bad cold weather we had caused it.

We had one of these and after quite a few problems with it we ended up getting a plumber in to run copper pipe to the tap.
I can`t remember the exact price that we paid but DH thinks that it was around £35, something to consider rather than replacing bits each year perhaps?
If the tap is in an easily accessible place then consider one that the head can be removed from to lessen the chance of people using the supply whilst you are away.

If a plumber puts in copper pipe, he'll almost certainly put in an isolating valve as well (they only cost pennies anyway) so you could isolate the tap if going away and through winter to help reduce the risk of it freezing and subsequently bursting.
