Natwest mistake marked my credit score!

Hi. I will try to keep the situtation brief and clear:

I was asked to upgrade my Natwest account in branch, from CardPlus to CurrentPlus, as I am now over 19.
The banker doing the upgrade was not to sure about something on the day, she called a collegue to make sure she was doing the upgrade right and not opening a new account.
A few days later I start to recieve a new Natwest welcome pack, cheque book, maestro card. A second current account with £0 balance shows when I log in online.
I call to activate the card (I still wasn't sure anything was wrong). I am told the card is void, the account it is linked to is different to my usual account, and the new account has also been closed by Natwest. It no longer shows online and the branch can see no record of it under my name.

It is obvious that the banker (another member of staff told me she is new!) mucked up the upgrade and opened a new account. Somewhere along the line someone at Natwest realised this, closed the new account, and upgraded the old one without telling me.

Whilst waiting to see her today another member of staff informed me that he thinks she logged into 'front system' instead of 'backhouse' where the internal upgrade should happen. She did not take a full ID so another Natwest department would have shut the account. This would have left a mark on my credit record.

I saw the banker who made the mistake. She was not helpful at all. She would not even acknowledge that anything funny went on for a few days. Gave me a 'your account is fine now and that's that' attitude. When I explained that I want the mark removed from my credit report she said that nothing to do with he or the bank. Contact Equifax and tell them yourself, the bank can't. She will not even pay the £2. She even tried to blog me off saying that the mark is small and DRAWING a small mark on a piece of paper. I thought it's an electronic 'mark' lol.....

Is that right? I have to sort this out with equifax myself? Will they just take my word for it if I say the banker made a mistake and I want record of that search deleted?
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

  • You should'nt have any marks on your credit report. It's only a current account. I had 3 bank accounts so far and the only one which is on my credit report has overdraft facility. The other two never been recorded.

Did you actually got a copy of your credit report?
  • Write to Natwest Customer Services and complain. The credit reference agency won't remove the mark without Natwest's agreement.

Oh, and think yourself lucky it was only a 'small mark'. They put a default on my husband's account in error, and we ended up having to take them to court before they'd admit the mistake and rectify it!

Give it a few weeks, and then get a copy of your credit file, you can even see it for free online if you sign up for the free trial.
If there is anything detrimental on it, ask Natwest to sort it out. If you pay the £2 ask them to refund it.
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.

The question is, does it really matter? Searches will stay on your record for about 1 year, but only if you have multiple searches in a short period of time will it make a difference. Are you expecting to request more credit in the next 6 months?
  • I thought this was a real error - this won;t damage your credit file

you would have been credit scored for the upgrade regardless
