We have just been given a quote for replacing our fencing, and just want to know if it's reasonable.

It's 16 metres long, at 1.8m high with a gate to be installed, plus 7 metres at 90cm high - all to be capped. They will be putting new posts in. Also included in the quote is the removal and disposal of the old fencing. About half the fencing is on a slope and we want it at a constant gradient, rather than stepped.

For this, we have been quoted £3,200.

This is broken down into labour of £2,015, plus materials and disposal of old fencing at £1,055 and equipment hire of £130.

It's our first quote back, and we will be getting others, but we were both a bit shocked by how high it was. We were expecting a quote of half that. Do we need a reality check?

Thanks.

It depends a bit on the spec. I have a quote here (which I've accepted) for 16m of 1.8m high feather edge at £1340, all-in. This is with concrete posts and concrete gravel boards, but no capping.

BTW, you should be able to save a significant amount of money by recycling the old fencing as firewood on Freegle or Freecycle - but make sure you warn people that it's treated wood.

If disposed of properly, what you have sounds like perhaps £200 to get rid of, so you should be able to get something knocked off the bill by disposing of it yourself.

Where do you live. I think you will find your other quotes to be a bit cheaper. Let us know.
  • I'm in Devon. We've had a couple of other people around but just waiting for the quotes to come back.

Fwor, using your figures as ballpark, then I'd guess a quote for our fencing should come in at under £2,000. Just can't justify over £3,000 for that!

Just to add to this thread, we have had one more quote back from someone who only does fencing, for £1,536. So that is more than half the first quote. Unbelievable!!

i'm confused.com, £1.5k from a guy that only does fencing, so what does the £3.2k company do ?????
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Make sure you see a sample piece of fencing first - some of the featheredge is so thin you could almost walk through it

I'd second getting your exisiting taken away via freecycle, planty of people will want it
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow

How thick should featheredge fencing be? Neither guy has mentioned it in their quotes so I presumed it was standard?

Keithgillyon, the £3.2K guy does landscaping. We figure that either he wasn't that keen on the job so figured he'd charge a fortune to make it worth while, or because he recently appeared in a local magazine he's feeling a bit uppity. I don't know.

The fencing specialist is a council approved contractor, so maybe he can get better trade discounts or something?

We are expecting two other quotes back, and we've had a letter from another chap who came out to give us a quote declining the work because of 'other committments'. Well then, why blooming come out and waste our time?? Should be glad to get a response either way, I suppose.
