Taking in foreign students/lodgers

Local universities will be a good place to start but in my experience students want to be up against the campus so distance could be a problem. University students tend to be here for a year (MA / top up courses) which would suit your plans a bit better.
I would always ask for the money in advance (some cultures have a more flexible attitude to contracts than the UK, and it is best to protect yourself).Emergency savings: 4600

I'll have a look at spareroom, hadn't heard of that site! Think I would prefer someone a bit longer term than short term few days/weeks at a time as that sounds like quite a lot of hassle.
You do also need to inform your insurer. Some of the big ones will not cover you if you have lodgers and those who do warn you that you will not be covered for theft unless there is clear evidence of a break in.
I have used Spareroom for all my lodgers.0
