The congestion charge in London has made it much easier to travel, and charging seems to be the only way.

If the whole country had a public transport system equal to London or better then yes it would work.

Lets have the alternative first then the road pricing and then it will work.

All that will happen otherwise is people will just pay because they have no other option and the income will just disapear into the goverments black hole.

When the government get income from things they don't just keep it all for themselves (unlike the private companies who own and operate "public" transport). They spend it on what they believe (rightly or wrongly) is good for the country.
If they're short of money they'll get it, whether by charging to use the roads or putting 1p on Income Tax. At least the former gives us some element of choice.

That's quite some lumping together there!
Considering that the OP spelt it correctly in the posting then it's probably a typo. But, of course, a single mistake proves beyone reasonable doubt that they are a petrolhead, neer do well, fine dodging, speedster, drink driving moron.
