So I'm still feeling very sympathetic to younger drivers.

I feel a little sympathy but then not long ago I looked at premium -v- inflation and premium -v- salary and on both counts found my premium as a new driver was relatively higher than what I'd be paying today if I were a teenager with a small car that is also a teenager.
  • I had a Morris Traveller, and I was over 25 when I passed my test, so age+ classic car policy + relatively undesirable car to steal, and also with this being mid-2000s, I paid around £300 for my first year's insurance. Then I found a different classic insurer, joined the owners' club, and found my insurance dropped to around £100 per year!
On a 14-year-old Civic, even with five years NCB at the end of this season, I'll be lucky to get fully comp insurance under £500. Hence why it's likely to be SORNed if I don't get a job soon.

I could only really afford to insure a fiesta when I passed my test 6 years ago... =/!

My 1st car was a Fiesta XR3

By 19 I was in a 9yr old Ford Scorpio 2.9, as it was ideal for munching up the miles between London and Moscow on a 2-weekly basis. That little motor did about 450,000 miles, and as far as I’m aware, it’s a taxi on Witham now, where there are no age limits

I’ve had everything from Mondeo 2.5 V6’s to the Galaxy 2.8 with 2 young kids, all at under 25. I really don’t envy the little ones now, even if I can’t afford to run a V6 engine full-time anymore. £380FC to insure my Scorpio 1st year was the best one I had!
    💙💛 💔
  • I had a Fiat X/19 as well plus a RS 3.1 Capri Mk1 and an Alfa Guilietta.

Later on had a Cortina, then uni and then taxis.

When I passed my test 5 years ago my first car was 1988 (same age as me) blue Ford Escort 1.3 L (not even a rev counter), I went round a round-a-bout and the seat bolts rusted and snapped and I fell onto the passenger side of the car.

It cost me £350 to insure with my mum as owner and me as a named driver, if I were to do it on my own they wanted £3,500.

My car history is pretty boring though, 1st car was the Escort, 2nd car was another Escort 1.8 (1994), then a Renault Laguna (1996) then a ford Focus 1.8 (2000) and now a Ford Focus 1.6 53 plate, which is the only car I've ever brought myself all the others were given to me.
