16 gb Memory pen drive suddenly stopped working

Hi,

I brought a Kingston DataTraveler 101 Gen 2 16GB USB Drive a couple of months ago. It was working fine, then all of a sudden yesterday it stopped being detected by windows.

For some reason I was transferring a large avi file and after importing that file to my USB it stopped being detected by both my laptop and the original PC which host the files.

When I plug it in, windows still chimes to recognise something has gone into the USB port. Scan all ports in device manager and they are all working properly.

Can anything be done? I have some really important files on it.

  • Can you try and plug it into another computer? I hope that will work? Make sure you copy the files elsewhere.

Memory sticks and all other memories are not 100% sadly, so the annoying message is that you need to make many copies.

I have tried plugging it in on an old xp computer and it said device is not recognised.

If I could access the USB and copy the files then I wouldnt have a problem, I would simply buy a new one.

I just dont understand how the pen drive could suddenly stop working when it was perfectly working a few hours ago.

You could say that about virtually any failed device.

Don't Kingston do lifetime guarantees on memory?

Just had exactly the same happen to me. Been working with it tonight and saving files from SParklebox (teaching website). Suddenly see it isn't recognised when trying to save new file and after some fiddling with it, I can get it to eventually (but not always) recognise the key but says its empty.

Not sure if it was knocked slightly on side of computer as sat very slightly squint in usb 'socket' when noticed it wasn't showing in my memory options.

Not absolutely disastrous as is my 'day to day key' for school but still would appreciate any suggestions at trying to retrive files.
If only I could stop finding good bargains on this site, I would save a fortune! :rotfl:

Where did you buy it from?

    Was it eBay?
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
  • I hate it when that happens. Remember to virus scan on a regular basis as well.
  • You need to RMA your 16 GB memory drive. If you need to recover the files you need to contact the Kingston customer care.
Its a electronic device and may be damage without prior information.

Kingston are not responsible for any loss of data-it's up to the OP to back up.
Solid state memory is as vulnerable to sudden failure as any other kind.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

This is an important question - there have been reports of fake memory devices on ebay that state more than they can actually hold

i.e. 16GB when true space is only 2GB - and once you hit 2GB either you lose stuff or they pack up :o
