Assuming no one has seen similar cheaper, I think I will make this.

A blank canvas painted & perhaps some stencils? Or could I buy the letters ready made.

I want it for the kitchen, would be nice with a black background & cream letters maybe.

Any advice?

Sounds fab ! As it's your own it will be unique. I'd suggest going to an art shop or the arts and cradt section of a DIY store.
