Someone claiming to be my partner to BG

Hi folks, please stick with me while i give the full story lol.

Back in December, thanks to this site, I found out about the Warm Home Scheme and seeing as my partner qualified (various heart conditions) we applied and were accepted.

We were due the payment between Jan and March but in January we were offered a property and decided to accept it. The supply at the new address was not BG so we phoned them and asked what would happen to the rebate if we switched to them once we moved. They said they would put the payment on hold until we switched and that once we'd registered as a customer with the current supplier we could phone them and switch.

So the day we move into the flat we go to ask for the meter reading. Over the course of the next four weeks we are given a few excuses, the doors to the cupboards aren't on, we haven't taken the readings yet, we haven't got the keys to the cupboards yet. All of these followed by "don't worry about it, we're paying" which sounds great but my partner doesn't want to lose their place on the scheme.

Here's where it gets strange, finally get the keys to the cupboard with the meter in yesterday, get the reading, register with Eon and go to switch to BG. When I phone i'm told that they were supposed to start the supply on the 22nd of this month but that someone phoned and cancelled on the 26th January. My guess is that they got the wrong end of the stick somewhere and went to switch the supply, but that's not the problem.

The issue is that on the 26th January someone phoned BG pretending to be my partner and cancelled, whover it was had all the correct details. Definately neither of us, we didn't know the supply was being switched, the reason for cancellation was "partner not happy" which isn't true as both of us wanted to stick with BG.

Am I being paranoid? The only people that would have all the details would be the housing association. Can't help but wonder if they had a contract with Eon yet they knew they couldn't dictate to us who our supplier was, I just can't see another reason for it.

I should mention that we signed the tenancy on the 21st January so legally the place was ours when the cancelation was made. It isn't the fact that our supply to BG will be switched later, it's the fact that someone used my partners details, phoned pretending to be them and could have jeapordised their place on the Warm Home Scheme that is bothering us both.

  • I doubt whether anyone phoned - supplier's employee will just have messed up and put that down as an excuse to cover their tracks - so no need for paranoia it's just a lazy operator

The guy I spoke to got it wrong, just been told that the "owner" phoned and said they didn't want British Gas supplying the property so I don't know where the "partner not happy" bit came from.

The housing association owns the building and there is nothing in the tenancy that says I can't switch supplier, in fact we had told 2 members of staff that we'd be switching over and nothing was said.

The housing association would of got a sorry you were leaving in their name or the occupier, as it was empty would of seen it as an et. Until you move in you dont have a right to change the contract

It's a new building, we're the first tennants.

Chanz4, does it not matter that although we hadn't moved in yet we had signed the tenancy before they cancelled?

We've seen members of staff numurous times and nothing has been said. We got a cancellation letter to the new place, we thought it was with regards to the previous address but obviously not, that letter was sent to my partner's name.

Yes, because until you take the property, you can not enter into an agreement.
