RDS/TA turned on but not working- suggestions?

Options
My OH recently bought a Peugeot Partner for his business (not new but in VGC, OH and van.....). Two days ago we decided to use it for a long distance trip from London to the West Country. Got in, turned on radio (as supplied with it) and also turned on RDS/TA - which registered as on on dashboard LED panel. Not a squeak out of either during 150 miles of road with extensive delays at intervals all the way due to major traffic accidents (3) and roadworks (at least 3).

Separate radio manual is not supplied with car and section in car manual about the radio is sparse to say the least but the RDS/TA definitely works, guy we bought van from was a builder who said he used it regularly and it is illuminated as on on the dash (LED goes out when you turn it off). Any suggestions?

  • Might be worth putting one of the national BBC networks on the presets (how anybody can not listen to a national BBC station is beyond me though :P Commercial radio is horrific) as I believe this has some bearing on it, I'm almost certain it does for RDS clock data. Was the RDS working?

I think you need to be listening to a preset station, otherwise the until doesn't know what to return you back to.

It can't really "break" I'd imagine it wasn't picking up a signal for some reason.

I've noticed that as well with the BBC local stations. If I'm listening to BBc local radio (like you, I cant stand commercial radio) I notice that the traffic announcements come on from other BBC local stations in the area every 20 minutes or so, yet never get interrupted by any of the 3 or 4 commercial stations' traffic announcements.
I think BBC supports RDS better than the commercial stations.
If the display is showing the station name, then RDS is working.
  • If only they would press the tit to switch it off at the end of the 'traffic' bit rather than let in run on with some 'DJ' inane chatter - more people might leave the TA enabled

Yep... I've noticed that too...then there's the Pirate stations that keep the traffic signal on so you pick it up if you have the TA enabled. Normally when this happens, they set the station name to a whole stream of text that scrolls across the display (8 characters is the legal limit for the station name in the UK because, heaven forbid, drivers might be distracted by scrolling messages on the display - talk about nannying)
