Nintendo DS Lite Overheating?

My son tried to remove a game from his DS last night and the game looks as if it has melted? We managed to get it out and other games are playing OK in it. Does anyone know whether there have been any problems like this before?
I had a look on google but have only seen items on the chargers overheating. The console looks fine so it couldn't have been put anywhere hot as surely that would have melted as well?
