Sofa, curtain and carpet cleaning

1) I have wool mix carpets, about four years old, which are a bit grubby, only a few small stains.

Am I best to hire a carpet cleaner, or does it work out better value to buy one of the VAX-type machines? Any recommendations?

2) My two pale gold sofas are also a bit grubby (so my Mum tells me - thanks Mum).

The instructions say they are dry clean only. I have had some quotes for someone to come and clean them - this is about £150:eek:

Is this the best way to go, or is there another appliance I can use to clean the sofas? Any ideas gratefully received.

3) My heavy downstairs curtains also need a clean. They ARE washable but the last time I did so they shrunk even though I followed the instructions.

I am unwilling to wash them again for that reason. Are there any cleaners I can use on them while they are still hanging?

Trying to save a few pennies on this cleaning malarkey. :D
