Lloyds paid up - but no correspondence?

Hi,
We put in a PPI claim against Lloyds TSB last year. We received a letter in September ish advising us that they were looking into our claim and we would hear back from them within 12 weeks. We worked out that this would be the end of Jan / beginning of Feb.
Heard nothing at all so far, and on the agenda for tomorrow was the letter to the ombudsman.
Happened to be checking bank balances today, and have had a bank credit from loansdirect with the same ref as the Lloyds loan.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth at all, but I thought it was really odd that we'd had no 'offer' from them if that makes sense? Also, have just logged into the Lloyds online banking and there is still an outstanding balance of £1kish on there (this was in arrears). Surely they would have paid themselves off first, before issuing a refund?
I'd really appreciate anyone's thoughts on this. Do Lloyds usually contact people with an offer before paying out?
