EON Final Bill Issue

Hello all
I would really appreciate any advice you could give me please. I recently moved into a privately rented house. The previous tennants were evicted (due to debt issues) and as a result both gas and electricity meters are installed at the property.
I had fully intended to ask for the meters to be taken out and this has been agreed with the landlord, but rather embarrassingly I have not found time to make the telephone call yet. However, the property is not double glazed and this winter I have been feeding the gas meter an astronomical amount of money. We were contacted by British Gas and asked if we would be willing to switch to them, which I agreed to do, as I had found the customer service from Eon quite shocking.
So, we switched to British Gas and a couple of weeks later received a bill for £24 from Eon, followed by an additional bill for 71p (it probably cost them most of the 71p to send the bill through the post!!). I may be a bit stupid, but I don't understand how I can owe Eon any money if I was on a meter? Even if I had used the emergency credit and not replaced it, it would have only amounted to £5?
I really need to contact Eon to ask them, but I only have a mobile at the moment and the last couple of times I contacted them, I had to que for between 20 and 35 minutes to get through to an operator and as a result ended up with an enormous telephone bill.
Any help in understanding this bill would be enormously appreciated. Of course I need to pay it a.s.a.p but am concerned I am paying for something that I may not owe? Thank you so much for reading

Hi PenniesIntoPounds
I’m sorry to hear that poor service from us lead to your change of supply and for the problems you’ve had in reaching us by phone to query your final bill.
Were both the gas bills we sent you marked as final bills? I suspect the second one was an amendment to the first. Are there estimated readings on either bill?
The meter readings we use to close your account, come from your new supplier and your final bill is automatically produced when this information comes in. It’s possible your last top up hadn’t reached us in time and may not have been included in the bill.
If you use the Contact Us form on our website you can email us with your query and one of our team will be in touch.
