Bit in bold is not strictly true, you declare points to your insurance company if they ask about about them, and answer the question truthfully! But only answer the question they ask.

Some want to know claims or convictions for different lengths of time than others. If ABCD insurance started asking you how many points you had had within the last 10 years, you would have to answer that question.
Its to do with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Sp30s are considered served after 5 years and do not have to be declared. ABCD insurance could ask but you wouldn't have to answer.

MarkyMarkD is correct here. If you've ever declared the points then they will be on a database somewhere.

Insurers only bother to check these databases when it comes to claim time as they look for any excuse to avoid paying. When you take out the policy they're happy to accept whatever you tell them and take your money.

It's strange that they have disappeared though. You should probably have a look around pepipoo and see if you can find any threads about the site where you got the points, occasionally camera partnerships screw up and have to cancel all the offences when they find out that they installed the camera on the wrong side of a speed limit change or something equally inept. If this is the case then your conviction would have been quashed and you can truthfully claim that you have not been convicted in the last 5 years.

Insurers generally only bother to check these databases when it comes to claim time as [strike]they look for any excuse to avoid paying[/strike] of course they shouldn't pay out to customers who lied to obtain their insurance. When you take out the policy they're happy to accept whatever you tell them and take your money in the same way that anyone entering into a contract is entitled to believe the honesty of the other party.
I'd slightly reword this as shown above.

I worded it the way I did for a couple of reasons. One is that people don't just give incorrect information due to dishonesty there are plenty of genuine reasons too, such as forgetfulness. It's pretty easy to get the month wrong when declaring an accident for example, or forget to declare penalty points that have been removed from your licence because they wern't there when you checked.

Insurers have the ability to check this information when you take out the policy but choose not to because it's more profitable to just take your money and then refuse to pay out later.
