French suppliers

Options
Has anyone tried to buy gas or electric direct from a French supplier. Heard that you need to ring Paris but the savings are considerable. Are the any pitfalls in this?

    Questabc a very Interesting question.

I’ve dug around a little and come up with this so far

    Electricity Regulation

In July 2009, the European Parliament and Council adopted a new Electricity Directive, Directive 2009/72/EC, which aims at introducing common rules for the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity. It also lays down universal service obligations and consumer rights, and clarifies competition requirements.

The Electricity Directive replaced (the Directive 2003/54/EC) gave an opportunity for the consumers to get clear information's about the electricity market. It obligated the Member States to define the measures about the protection of the consumers, and promote the economic and social cohesion. The dysfunction in the internal market in electricity, the European Commission considered it necessary to redefine the rules and measures applying to that market in order to guarantee fair competition and appropriate consumer protection.

It goes on and on but there is this bit

The legislation requires that all consumers have a choice to buy electricity and gas from different suppliers, via the existing networks as well as via direct lines. It sets a large number of requirements for power and gas companies, with different rules for supply, transmission, and distribution companies.

As there are now a few undersea electricity interconnectors, the “via existing networks” could be satisfied

Not sure if this I have emailed my MEP to ask
