Full list of money you owe?

Options
Hi,

New to this so sorry if it's posted elsewhere.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to know if I owe money to anyone? I used to have debts a few years back but made an effort to clear them but want to make sure everything is gone.

Does Experian list every debt you have?

You need to look at every credit reporting agnecy. So Experian, Equifax and Callcredit. I thought I had cleared everything then went on Equifax and found something else.

Checking all 3 CRAs would give you a fuller picture.

It wouldn't guarantee to show everything though. Nothing will do that.

Getting copies of your credit reports can be a starting point but they won't necessarily show all the debts you owe.
E.g if a default notice was added over 6years ago then it would no longer show on your credit file.
And some creditors don't report to the credit reference agencies (or didn't historically) such as utility debts and similar and some old current accounts don't. And things like debts to the social fund wouldn't show on there.

If you do request copies of your credit files for the first time at a new address it will allow your creditors to find out your new address and so you may find that debt collectors start chasing you (if they are not currently).

You mention having debts a few years back - depending on how long ago you mean and how recently you have paid anything towards them you might want to consider if the debts could be statute barred before you start paying.

  • brilliant thanks for that! I registered with Equifax and they say my old barclaycard is still active.

Activ Kapital are chasing me for this, saying i owe over £200, citing an address i lived at 10 years ago.

Equifax, however, cites a balance of £4 and an address of three years ago.

Could i have just missed off £4 off my debt and now after 3 years its turned into a £200 debt?? On equifaxes payment history you can see that i've paid it off then £3 appears after i've paid the "balance" of £215.

if only i'd have kept my paper statements!!!
