The mileage you are doing definitely a diesel
Honest johns "real world" figures should help see....

If you are doing about 300 miles a week for work at 32mpg then that will work out at 15000 miles a year and will consume 469 gallons. At £1.33 a litre for unleaded that will cost £2830 a year for fuel alone.
A diesel which manages 50mpg will use 300 gallons which at £1.40 a litre will cost £1907, a saving of £923.
Servicing costs shouldn't be that much different to a petrol car nowadays as the service intervals are similar for most manufacturers.
I would expect a 1.4 to manage rather more than 32mpg though -- 40mpg should be easily achievable.0 -

I did the figures as a comparison with the OP's existing car, but you are correct in saying a 1.4 should be able to manage 40mpg without too much difficulty."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

Ah right yes I didn't read that post, I was going on the 1.4 vs 2.0d in the original request.
TBH a 2.0d should be achieving more than 50mpg also!0 -
really depends on the type of driving and car etc.
but the above quotes are good to go by on mpg and cost saving calc.
petrol can be cheaper to service and maintain, as diesels have turbo, dpf etc.
diesel cost more to buy in first place if buying like for like age and spec. but tax could be less.0 -
Also look at HP and top speed. these are quite good comparitors and if top speed is below 90 will it have hte legs for motorway in comfort.
For the miles also consider comfort.
don't rule out the smaller diesels,
The 1.5dci in the clio pulls well they are fine at motorway speeds and will do 50-65mpg without problem.
This is much better drive than the 1.9 non turbo in our 306.
With the budget at £2k it might be worth considering newer high mileage.0 -
i'd be looking at a 1.8tdci focus. plenty of them around to pick up a low miler for around 25000

Quite possibly, but I used a figure which was realistic and should be easily attainable as a good comparison with the OP's exsisting car.
If the OP wants to see MPG figures being attained in the real world he could try searching on www.fuelly.com. There is also a german based site http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/ which could be of assistance."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"
