I would imagine that the main cause is hair and soap scum, so I would start with a couple of kettles of boiling water followed by a generous dollop of bleach.

I think the first thing I would try would be to see if you can haul anything UP through the plug hole, by poking a crochet hook, or a small hook made from a bit of bent wire down it.

I would agree with this, had same problem, nothing worked. Nearly died of embarrassment when I pulled what I thought was going to be a little bit of hair and it kept coming and coming and coming:o:o

But it flowed freely immediately :D

It shouldn't be difficult to take off the bath panel and remove and clean the trap. Better than all these chemicals you throw down.

These are excellent for pulling out hair which is the major cause of bath/shower blockage. Yucky job but well worth it.

  • As per saver0811, but buy yourself a plunger - you'll get much better suction / compression than with a hand. And cover up the overflow hole while you're doing it.

Part fill the bath with water.

Cup your open hand, and press down and up on the plug hole rapidly.

The alternating compression and vacuum should clear any blockage, it works for me brilliantly, after trying chemical methods.

I had the exact same problem myself a few weeks ago and can testify that the advice given by saver0811 worked for me. You could buy a plunger as it's always useful to have. Definitely clean the U bend afterwards - try pushing down about five or six tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda then slowly pour some clear vinegar into the plug hole. That will dissolve soap scum, hair etc. Then flush through with lots of running water from the tap. Just do that once a week and your bath plughole problems shouldn't recur.

This happened to me and I ended up buying a bottle of sulphuric acid to pour down the plug hole. It dissolved the hair. (There is a possibility that it also dissolved the screw holding the pipework to the bath, since that pulled away not long afterwards. However, I'm not 100% sure that wasn't coincidence.)

To prevent it happening again, get one of those "sink savers" and use it to trap hair before it goes down the plug hole. You'd be amazed at how much they capture.

  • Sulphuric acid will attack most metals, and is a seriously dangerous chemical which needs very careful handling. It is recommended for use only by professionals. Mixing concentrated sulphuric acid with water can cause an explosive reaction, and if the stuff splashes back into your eye, you're blind. If it touches your skin you're burned. If you swallow it you're dead.

Most baths\basins allow the plug hole grid to be removed via a small screw in the centre, if no screw, then it should be possible to literally unscrew the grid from the plug hole, this should help gain access to the blockage using the hook n eye method previously posted above.

If you can see hair gathered around the grid struts, you could try cutting them away with scissors then pouring boiling hot water through to ensure it goes down.
