It is fair.
you don't own the car, they do. You also have an agreement to pay them the loan on it.
I suspect you'd have been offered gap insurance yes? That's what it is for, covering the 'gap' between the amount owed and the cars current value.
So, fair, yes. does that make it any better? Of course not but you seem to be ok so be thankful for that if nothing else.
