I am lookng at painting a bedroom that has bright pink and purple walls:eek:

I want it to be cream/off white, I have tried a few testers by Crown I think but they seem watery:confused: any ideas on the best brand paint to buy to cover these walls??

  • I renovated a house that had a 'lovely' rainbow painted on a bedroom wall.

    In GLOSS! aarrgghhh

I never seen a rainbow with black on before either!

We just sanded it down (which you don't need to do with emulsion though) and gave it about 4 or 5 coats of Wickes Magnolia Trade Emulsion, and that did the trick.

    HTH and Good Luck! :)
  • Dulux once emulsion might do the trick.

Dulux is the best paint IMHO.
  • It'd take alot of coats to cover it with the paint your are saying.

Why not buy a neutral white ONCE paint. Go over it with that thickly then go over the neutral colour with the one you want.

I don't know about the technicalities of it (ie: there might be a reason not to - someone else might be able to advise) but I'd think painting it over with matt paint first would give you better coverage, and then covering that with the emulsion of your choice.

Dulux is the best paint, and dont paint your already pink and purple walls straight off with a colour.
Put a coat of white matt on the walls first, then paint with your choice of colour.

As for once  I would not give it house room, for the DIYer who is slower than a professional painter its not a good paint to use, it drags, and goes all gloopy.

Even me as a professional P&D always slightly water down this paint, its a nightmare, specially dulux as its sooooo thick.

Even if you buy ordinary emulsion by dulux, I would still thin, as you will get a far better smoother finish.
  • I had exactly the same colour scheme in the room that I decorated three weeks ago. The people here like bright colours. Midway though painting the orange living room!!

It was softsheen pink and purple and I did around 3-4 coats of value magnolia. On the orange walls, it has been one coat of matt white to cover the orange mostly and then one coat of B&Q Lifeproof Matt paint. The first option was the cheapest BTW.

on bare walls or a dark to light color change, i always use some cheap wickes type magnolia, then a quality brand as the top coat. ie dulux etc..

ive never had any success with a one coat type product. maybe its just me, but i think its a con trick.

btw, if the job doesnt look too good, then give it another coat. may take extra time but the results are far better. did my lounge last year (new plaster) and 3 coats of magnolia. looks the business.

I used a paint pad to apply it when I did an hall stairs and landing in a three storey house, I used a brush to cut in the edges and never had a problem at all with it ;)

do all prep work first. then emulsion, and lastly gloss paint the woodwork.
