PPI bit of advice please

I'm sorry if i've posted this in the wrong section, i'm just requiring a bit of help if possible.

A letter from DWS Claims arrived at my mum's house addressed to my dad whos died 12 years ago, so she binned it.

Two days later they phone her saying my dad had taken ot a Mastercard with Barclys back in 1996 and she was entltled to £1200, i've trained my mum well as to never disclose info to anyone on the phone and when they asked for her bank details she out the phone down....... they rand back an hour later and my mum explained that her daughter deals with her finances and to put the details in writting.

After a bit of reasearch on the company i see they are PPI claim people and would require a £250 fee from mum plus take 10% of any compensation so not something we will be persuing.

it's got me thinking however did my dad taken out PPI on his mastercard, i shread all his mastercard details once we had paid them off so have no details at all, how did DWS get my dads details, and they must have thought he was still alive, Is it worth me writting to Barclays to ask or do you think it's all a hoax ?

Any help would be great x

Complain about this company, tell them about the upfront fee they asked for and everything else they said re your Dads card.

They have no info regarding this card so do not know if a claim can be made or not, they are breaking the rules here, and asking for an upfront fee, had your Mum paid this, i am afraid she may never have seen this money again.

All your mum has to do is contact Barclays regarding this card, they will help with a claim, if there is one and they do not charge £250 for the pleasure.

Look here for reasons for mis sell

If any/all applied to your Dad, then put a claim in.

Barclays was VISA. So, it wouldnt have been mastercard.

Whether he had PPI or not is not in the public domain. They are cold calling and playing the odds. These are unqualified and virtually unregulated sales people preying on the weak minded and using techniques similar to advance fee fraud to try and get people to sign up.

  • My mother-in-law has had a similar experience to dunstonh's with this company.

Unfortunately, mine was not so well-coached about dealing with predatory cold-callers, so she handed over her credit card number. DWS have charged the £250 up-front, and sent a "claims pack" to be completed. The pack is quite complex and full of legalese jargon - I suspect they hope people will give up and just abandon the pre-paid fee.

Does anyone have advice on how we get the £250 back, and avoid a tsunami of aggressive or intimidating phone calls and letters?

Surely this sort of preying on relatively vulnerable people with promises of cash windfalls in exchange for an "administration fee" is a scam just like those e-mails apparently from Africa and Russia. Is it illegal, or just immoral? Something should be done. I can't access the Justice website link provided in this thread.

(My first post on MSE so apologies if I have broken any protocols.)

i had a letter yesterday and then a phone call today. Thought this was legit...balls!

What flagged it for me was that they split the £250 fee to 2 x 125.00, which ithought was very weird.

Anyway I have spoken with my credit card company and they have said to document everything. Send them a cancellation letter by recorded delivery and if I dont have my money back then i can claim after 30 days through my cc company.

Such an idiot, caught me on a bad day as I'm sleep deprived with a 2 day old baby....makes my blood boil!

    Any other advice welcome :)

I emailed them to cancel and had a call back tonight. Said they will cancel for me.

To inform people thatthey weren't going to claim PPI for me but claim because of increased credit card limits without authorisation. Don't know if this is possible or not? Perhaps someone can let me know?

Anyway I said they were acting almost illegally and i didnt understand why there was an upfront fee......I also accused them of being too pushy and of guessing my financial circumstances as they couldn't possibly know what my credit card was or how long i had it for. The sales guy said i would definitely get money but he should never say that as he doesn't know my financial circumstances, preent or pat without my authorisation, which they did not have.

Anyway hopefully I'll get my money back!!
