My village is going for a red, white and blue hanging basket theme for the Jubilee celebrations this year. To keep costs down I would like to grow from seed, so can anyone suggest suitable plants that I can germinate myself to fit this colour scheme?

T&M are doing some Petunia Easy Wave Union jacks for a reasonable price IIRC. I know not seed but still cheap! GL

Petunias, geraniums, lobelia. Pansies are great from seed and easy to grow as well.

    Hi

Are you going to be planting hanging baskets or tubs?

    How many?

    How will you water them.

Red - Salvias, nasteriums (cheap and easy).
Blue - if it is only a few baskets buy Lobelia as it is a lot easier than growing it. Go for the dark blue trailing one.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

    I've been Money Tipped!
It wouldn't be as visually impresive as flowers, but i like the idea of red and ahite from strawberries and blue from a little borage... so that you have half a very british pimms in your baskets!

Probably both hanging baskets and tubs - maybe 2 of each, but it depends on how many plants I end up with. I could pass any spares on to neighbours.

Watering won't be a problem (as long as I don't forget) as they will be right by the front door, but it is south facing so the hanging baskets will needs plenty of water-retaining gel etc.

Thanks for all the lovely ideas everyone. I will see which of thes seeds suggested I can get hold of cheaply (Lidl, Wilko etc).
  • fYI - Gardeners World mag is doing 48 red white and blue plug petunias for £4.90 p&p. My mum is getting some for her pots and it means she doesn't have to do all the sowing and growing.

  • Hi
there was an article in Garden News a couple of weeks ago regarding this, luckily I hadn't got rid of my copy yet so I have taken photos of the article as my scanner has broken and if you pm with your email address i can forward you the list.
    Cheers

Less plug plants than the Gardener's World offer,
36 petunia plants but with the addition of a mix of 5 packets of flower seeds, also for £4.90 total.
