can bt default my credit file

Options
Hi I received a letter from a debt collection agency SRJ at my new address stating I owed BT £26 from an address I lived at 15 months ago.

I stated to this company I did not owe BT anything and they said they would send proof in the post.

I called BT any the said the money was for a phone rental. I asked the guy when I cancelled my line why they didn't request there phone back.

He gave me an address to write to but if that fails will I have to pay the money and can this company default my credit file.

I am trying to keep a clean credit file as I want to get a mortgage.

They may well be able to put a default on your file. Although it will depend on when you signed up with BT and what the terms said.

Old accounts they didn't get permission in the terms to share information with credit ref agencies. But certainly for new accounts opened for over a year they have been getting permission, and whilst they don't share general account information if the account is run correctly they do share defaults and sometimes missed payments - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loans/credit-rating-credit-score#gas

I don't know exactly when they started getting permission on new accounts

Thx Tixy, I had an account with BT for over ten years and never had so much as one late payment. I checked my credit file and there is no record off it but I have decided to pay the money in full. I have got myself into trouble in the past with company's doing stuff like this, I used to refuse to pay and end up with a default on my account but I want to keep a clean credit file from now on.
  • Although it's "not right" and doesn't sit comfortably with me ... if it were me, I'd be tempted to pay and then argue the case afterwards which should hopefully result in a refund.

I've had a default in the past for a ridiculous sum of money (I think it was £27) and it grated for every single one of the 6 years it sat on my account.

Thx, I know what you mean I have a £69 default from orange issued 2 years ago which has been fully settled. This default is stopping me from getting a mortgage even with a 20% deposit. According to the brokers I have talked to about this, will stop me getting a mortgage for aleast another 2 years.

It is a good idea, however before I payed the bill I sent them an email requeting for this debt to be cancelled. A guy gave me a call back and I could not make out a word he said his english was that bad.

I have no problems with indian call centres, I'am with three and I always understand them and find them really helpfull.
  • Hi I have a similar default on my file from orange, I was advised by experien to put a notice of correction on the file as this would mean when ever a credit search was done they would be alerted to look manually and not rely on the computer to make the decision. Mine should drop off 2014, hope that is of some use to you Owon because a 20% deposit is really good I can't understand why they said no.

Thx, I think it's because the default is slightly less than 2 years old. I was told by the brokers that it would need to be a least 4 years old before a lender would touch me. I'am just going to privately rent for 2 years and hope they dont make it even harder to get a mortgage in the mean time.
  • Ah I see, might be an idea to put a notice of correction on explaining the circumstances surrounding the default, I mean I didn't realise mobile company's could put defaults on infact if I had of known I would have probably sort out other avenues it's a sickner.

  • I've just had a letter from SRJ too, and when I rang them not knowing what it was for, they told me it was a default with 3 mobile. I had bought my daughter a dongle with a 24 month contract, but I had moved twice and when I wrote to 3 to ask when the contract was due to finish, they said they wouldn't discuss anything with me as I had given the wrong address. I managed to find the date I had purchased the dongle and cancelled my Direct Debit to 3 after 25 months (just to make sure I didn't end it too early). However SRJ say that I should have given 1 months notice to 3 mobile, and that is why I have the default to pay. I have done the Equifax credit check and the default is showing in red. Obviously I will pay it, but I will need to do a notice of correction too, as 3 mobile wouldn't talk to me!!!

Thats your fault, rather than 3's as it was a minimum contract. Unlike the ops case of giving notice but having a payment outstanding.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
