Paying for Pay Slips - 60 quid CRBs

Hi!

A query hear regarding working and pay conditions.

My spouse recently joined an organization which required a CRB check. In their offer letter for the position, they stated that they would deduct £60.00 for administration charges to get the CRB for her. When asked why they were charging above the nominal rates they did not offer any elaboration or explanation.

When her pay cheque arrived, they had deducted £65.00, without prior notification that the charge had increased.

On top of that, they have also charged £4.00 as administration charge for issuing the pay cheque!

Is this all above board or is there something wrong here?

Thanks in advance!

She was charged for the play slip or for the pay itself?

If she started the job she accepted the terms in the offer letter but if the charge is more than the letter stated then it's an illegal deduction in the wages and the same goes for the £4

I think she will will need to ask HR what these deductions are for and ask where she agreed to them
  • Thanks for the reply!

She was told of a £60 charge for CRB, then charged £65 without being informed of the increase.

The £4 were deducted as "administration charge" for processing her pay and producing the payslip which was not stated earlier either.

So if she wasnt informed about either change/charges before, then are such deductions unreasonable?

    Yes it is unreasonable.
A wage slip is a legal requirement, they can't charge for it.

You can't be charged for your pay!!! I have never heard of that at all.
  • Thank you both for your comments. I thought as much. They are giving alot of "put up or shut up attitude on this" so am searching for something concrete that she can take to her manager.
  • Is this some sort of umbrella company setup?
  • Yes, a Welfare to Work organization no less. They have a bunch of attached companies as well. One of them is a recruitment arm, it seems to me they are billing their employees for work done by a sister organization.

It isn't right to charge £65 when told it is £60, but there isn't a standard charge as such.

There is the fee to the CRB itself, and then the Umbrella Body which carries out the CRB may make an additional charge for admin. This can vary widely.

  • Never pay for a CRB check. If the organisation wants one, they should pay for it.

I think shes stuck now, with little wiggle room. But I find it outrageous that they want her to pay for the administration for delivering her salary, and arbitrarily increased the cost of the CRB without any advanced notice.
