All my lovely little seedlings are coming up but I fear I've left it far too late for my tomatoes. I do have some cheat plants that I bought, so I might see some fruits of my labour. Looking forward to pricking out and potting on next week. If nothing else, it's therapeutic. Alexi, some of your seeds i saved from last year have germinated.
Sorry to hear about your pony, LIR. The closer we get to getting livestock, the more I think I might return to vegetarianism....0 -

We weren't going to eat her!0 -
You've given me a giggle! I'm laughing so much, I've nearly woken the girls up (am in bed with them... still nursing... turned 3 last month
....hence the unchecked post ) I wondered, belatedly, if it would be open to alternative interpretation

Because I got quite stressed about it all (I think its just too soon for me after special girl) we've decided to not look again until after summer. Probably.
It is a very emotional time when horse hunting. I let my heart rule my head both times I bought and ended up with horses that were not right for me and it resulted in years of heartache. Better to take your time and make the right decision.
Do you have any good yards nearby that have horses regularly for sale? We have a few here that always have lovely ones for sale and they really take the time to match horses to riders. I know you are very experienced however it may take some of the stress out of the process.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

That's good to hear, about the seeds! Mine have been in the fridge the whole time, sorry to say I have done nothing again this year
You could always have chickens just for eggs, then you get animal protein without having to kill anything to eat it and it'll teach the kids the first part of learning where meat products come from without too much heartache."...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -

Yes it will .....but when your first sick chicken comes along......
what do you do:- let it die slowly?
- kill it?
- take it to the vet?
These are the realities anyone contemplating chicken keeping should think about.
We've only been keeping hens for a few years, and yet the Big Decision has had to be made three times now in relation to sick birds + two c0ckerels we bred which no one wanted.Of course, the latter problem can be avoided by not breeding.
And then there's the birds that conk out, literally, in half an hour, and you never know why.
Our birds aren't old yet!
But I still think it's good for kids to see all this. After all, similar things will happen with their hamsters, guinea pigs etc. Just don't think 'Oh well, hens are merely birds.' They seem to me to have more character than the average guinea pig. (Well, some of them anyway!:rotfl:)0 -
Yep, I am afraid, IMO, chicken keeping on a realistic smallholding budget comes most ethically with a commitment to deal with the worst.0

I took option 3
Sunny atm and got out the camera.- Wild beds and pond with apple tree fence
- New beech hedge, rose garden with chives
- Ferns, fuchsias and foliage on the shaded north side, very late this year
- Cox in flower
- Soft fruit and herb beds, sage looking a bit sorry atm but we love it for the flower display every year. Some of the rocks weigh over a tonne and were left here when the NE corner of the plot was excavated through bedrock
- jostaberry, bit of a brute of a plant!
- terraced beds at least a month behind
- As are the strawberries in this bed ( although the S facing high sun beds are at least 3 weeks more advanced)

Rhiwfield I always love seeing pictures of your garden it is gorgeous and how I would like mine to look eventually.
It is warm and sunny today which is lovely and I am hoping to get a bit done in the garden, although the beds are saturated.
We got a bit of a fright this morning and I need to just relax as much as possible.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
BIG POOPS.....
turns out trailer has more problems than i knew about....
chap who "bought" it was really good about it considering he came from chester !!:o
the power launcher was missing a key to try it out.:( which meant we couldnt test all the wheel blocks that "steer" it...
so gotta re list it as trailer only....big drop in value... POOP...
WELL its round 2 on the battle at the hospital next monday, got to get the assesors to pass it all now but we have better odds than before. what worries me is if this was my mum alone dealing with it she would not have stood a chance. so the elderly alone are very vulnerable to the system. and they end up losing out and usually the one "left behind alone" ends up literally worrying themselves to death over the care of thier dear one....vicious circle.
on a lighter note, the goose i got the other day is a sweetheart.. ive called him GEORGE.goosegoggins hates him tho !! so george is in garden with pond and GG and ducks in the back garden with ditch pond ! george loves to be stroked, he is so passive and loves human company....strolled in the kitchen this morning...:rotfl: BUT he needs company other than mine ! so do i rehome him [with chickens?] or do i get a big fat chook to keep him company... dont think he knows hes a goose !
its dry and brightish today...:D
off to visit dad now, have a good day y'all.
hope CTC has a profitable fun weekend
RHIWI....love em and many thanks0
