hi, can anyone help? about a student grant and income support

hi :)

im not sure if this is the right place to post? but basicaly, i am just about finishing a level 3 course and just got a place for a foundation degree to carry on studying what im doing at college. i am a single mum and on income support. while at my interview today i was told i can get a grant to help with costs towards the course of a one off payment of £1200. now i was just wondering if anyone knew/had any experiance of this and if it will affect my income support at all? will it stop me from getting it for a while while i live off that money? :S very confused!
