just got an email from 18185 and they said virgin was correct, 0808 is charged at the same rate as a 0845 number with virgin, so:

this means 18185 is more expensive than just using virgin media?
    i.e.
call to local 0208 number with virgin in the day would be 6p connection, 3p per minute = 9p
call to local 0208 number using 18185 with virgin would be 6p connection fee (with virgin), 5p per minute (with virgin), then on top of that 5p connection charge (with 18185) then 1p per minute (with 18185) = 17p

This also applies to all the other numbers. The only way it would be cheaper is with international calls. Maybe.

Can anyone confirm how much they pay to virgin for calling a 0808 number?

I use 0808 numbers on a Virgin Cable line and because its a FREEphone number its FREE,as i have already pointed out to you. I dont make a habit of giving out duff info, unlike Virgin Media.:D

yeah, sorry, i don't mean to say you're wrong,
but even 18185 are saying virgin is right. I think i'll make a short call using it then wait to see what it says on my bill next month.
cheers for all the help thou.

There are hundreds of Virgin Media customers using the FREEphone 0808 access number.

Though the more and more people who inform Virgin what they plan to do, the more likely the number will get blocked from Virgin Media lines.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • Recently my father died, and during that period I was making a vast number of calls during the day. I used 18185 for most of them on Virgin Cable and was charged £14 on my card by 18185. If Virgin had also been charging me for these calls my bill for that period would have been astronomical... but it was not. Whether they are still charging me a small connection charge (13p) for each call I cannot tell as these would not be listed separately on my Virgin bill.

I have noticed however that more companies are starting to use 0844 and other such numbers that 18185 do not support. Plus, I fully expect Virgin Media to block 18185 if too many people start using it.

Are you saying you were using the 18185 prefix (as opposed to the 08081703703 freephone gateway) on a Virgin cable line?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
