Got a letter saying electricity meter needed to be replaced. Having googled seems legit. However are there anything things I need to watch out for? For instance would it be prudent to submit a meter reading online just before the switch.

Oh and will it be a smart meter or just a straight meter change. Asked when phone to book appointment but call handler didn't know!

Thanks.

  • Hi Cr1mson,the meter installer takes your old reading and sends it off electronically to your supplier just after the fitting of the new meter,I have read on this forum that smart meters are now optional so you may have a choice in the matter.Any new meter fitted usually starts at zero, have known them to fit gas meters taken from other houses which are not on zero, but either way the start readings of the new meter are also sent immediately to your supplier

The service engineer who changes the meter is supposed to leave a card showing what the old meter was reading when he removed it, but there are many reports on this site that this wasn't done,
( I had to chase the meter exchangers van down the road to get the old meter reading)

Just make damned sure that you do have the old meters reading before the exchange crew leave.

I got my meter changed and it started at 20 yet when I got my bill they had used 0 for the start reading.

Luckily I had taken a photo of the old and new meter along with the sticker that was stuck on my new meter showing it started at 20 so my bill was amended.

So take a picture of your old and new meter, making sure of course that the readings and meter numbers are legible.

    No.

    They overcharged me by 20.

Why do you think I was under charged by 20?
