Need Help Finding A Laptop...

...the situation is as follows:

My laptop is knackered, and the Insurance are willing to let me choose a replacement, as long as it's similar. It can be a bit more advanced, but I'll have to cover the costs. I'm willing to spend a maximum £100 to cover them.

My original laptop was the P28. Sadly I don't know which model, but I know it was around the £400+ mark at the time (over a year ago) It could probably be the first one in the link below...

If anyone knows of a model like it with a dual processor (P28 had a single) and wouldn't break the £100 cost barrier, post it here! Vista is not neccassary, but everything in the original spec is, as standard of course!

Preferably a light weight laptop released mid 06', because the P28 is a behemoth!

Any help is greatly appreciated

  • Find out what the insurance company are going to give you and then let us know how much you have to spend.

If they give you £400 your still gonna be at the lower end of whoever's range you go for with £500, but you have a better chance than all those askking for a decent laptop for £300. As a result you will need to sacrifice some of the features, do you really need dual core? nahh I didnt think so I know I would rather loose a little weight on the laptop than have a 120GB drive and have an 80GB a hard drive can be upgraded for not much memory is the same, so concentrate on the stuff that is dificult to change like the cpu and the weight, Yes cpu's can be upgraded but normally only in the same family and to a certain point.

There are loads of laptop wanted posts so have a search and see what you can get, I personally like the Toshiba's and some can be got for less than £500.

I'd rather have dual processors & light weight than more memory...because I'm going to invest in this mother!!...

And to be honest, I'm out of touch with the spec game...I used to know what was good, but for the past year I haven't been keeping tabs with latest developments...other than knowing a dual processor is better than a single (I ******* hope so anyway!) :o

I appreciate your advise, and am Intruiged by the Toshibas. Any particular model to look out for?

And I'm allowed to get any laptop, but I pay the difference if it's more expensive, they cover the £400 odd the original p28 cost. Hope this helps.

Infact, I've been going about this the wrong way. What I should be asking for is the latest laptop, for around £500, which would completely destroy the p28...meaning I'd get it for a fee of £100!
  • The Sat Pro L30 £498.99 Its core duo 1.6Ghz with 1GB memory and an 80gb drive DVDrw the lot. and the weight is 2.4Kg which is slightly lighter than your old one. I tisnt the best looking laptop but it should be pretty good, the specs are outstanding CPU wise but as you say you want dual core I dont think you will get a decent quality laptop for much less. If you want a faster CPU then you need to spend quite a bit more the 1.6 is really the entry level now.

The Tosh sat pro A120 is a slightly better looking laptop but is slightly more expensive. The big difference is the CPU is core2duo which has improved battery management and a performance increase due to a 677mhz bus and 2mb cache compared to the T2060 which has a 533mhz bus and 1mb cache. I tis proberbly worth the extra actually.

I was wondering if you had realised you were getting a new laptop for very little as the insurance company are giving you the cost of the old one. I wouldn't let them buy it for you and you pay them the excess, get ta cheque from them and buy it yourself.
