Put £3,000 into a Direct ISA with NS&I. You'll get 5.80% tax free interest, guaranteed to be 0.55% above the base rate until 2008. Do that now and put the other £2000 into a decent Instant Access account (Yorkshire Building Society's Internet Saver is pretty good). After April 5 (beginning of new tax year), deposit the other £2000 into your Direct ISA.
