Returned Recorded Delivery - Where do I stand?

I had an email the day it was posted asking where the item was and told them it had been poste dthat day and gave them the tracking number saying that it would arrive the following day..if not let me know and I'll chase it for them. Have heard nothing since.
What happens in situations like this? Can anyone help?

I have has this happen to me, buyer has emailed to see where there item is and emailed back asking them to confirm the address that I have sent it to only to find that it's different because they have moved and it's not been updated in paypal but it did come back through RM who had opened it to get the return address and then resent to new address and they have paid for the extra postage.
