That's a bit of a subjective question, like asking whether an apple is better than an orange. I like wood clad ceilings so I'd think it would look better (to me) left as it is - you may prefer it painted.

Painting would be the easiest, personally i hate cladding so I would be inclined to rip the whole lot off.

Paint it, if you want but i think a satin/eggshell finish would look better. I hate gloss paint.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

2 things that are naff: 1)timber clad ceiings. 2)gloss paint.

Put them together at your peril.

And carrot cake is naff too. Its wrong to put vegetables in cakes.

It does depend a lot on the house - in a mid-century house timber clad ceilings can be appropriate. Stuck in say a Victorian terrace they look naff.

  • We had this in our last house, we covered it with plasterboard and got a plasterer to skim over it.. looked so much better

I second that (apart from the carrot cake).

I think timber cladding looks awful but it's personal choice.

Gloss, well I avoid all gloss, hate it with a passion,it just looks cheap and awful to me.But again, personal choice.

I would say though, that if you want to keep the cladding use satin or eggshell on it,gloss would just draw your attention to it ,in my mind.

I,personally, would rip it out or have plasterboards put over and then skimmed.
