Hi, I wouldn't tell the insurance you are living abroad. My friend insures all his vehicles (UK Reg) in the UK & he lives in Spain with the vehicles.QUOTE]

Are you allowed to do this? I though the insurance company needs to know the address where the vehicle will be parked most of the time.
  • Thank you all again for your assistance; much appreciated. It will be possible to name my mother as the main driver on the insurance policy despite me being the registered owner, as I did this with my first car when I was 17. I was not the registered owner but I was allowed to be named as main driver on the policy.

It will be a shame to lose my no claims bonus as it really makes a huge difference in price (I am currently 21 and coming up to 4 years no claims) - would it not be transferable from my insurance policy abroad when I return? In Dubai they will accept the no claims I have built up from driving in the UK, but I suppose our insurance companies here are probably not so accommodating...

The legisalation is all designed to keep uninsured drivers off the road actually seems to be designed more to make it almost impossible for law-abiding citizens to keep vehicles insured sometimes.

I completely agree with the above; it does seem to be a rather baffling system...but thank you all for helping me to navigate it and find a solution!

I'm pretty sure you're only allowed to drive vehicles abroad on UK insurance for a limited time...and yes, you do have to state the UK address where the vehicle will be parked for the majority. This definitely doesn't sound above board to me.

For things like this you need to be speaking to the more specialist insurers, not the huge ones with massive call centres that are only interested in "normal" people.

Much as I hate to recommend them, give Adrian Flux a try. They offer "lay up" policies for people who aren't going to be driving their car at all so they're possibly more experienced at dealing with people in unusual situations.

I would also contact Stuart Collins 01792 655562 they got me insurance with 12 month green card to cover frequent trips to France.
