Help with police recovery etc

had a fairly major accident in my car yesterday, only myself involved and a cyclist who i missed but he watched what happened, he took it upon himself to call th police even though nobody was injured and it was a quiet back road and the car itself finished off in a ditch at the side of the road, when he arrived he took everyones details as another car that was behind me had stopped, but then when i said "im waiting for a friend to arrive to tow it home/out of the ditch" he didnt look happy, i then said well when he gets here ill pop home and get the phone numbers for my insurance and recovery and get them to recover it as i want it to go to my house not a garage or storage, so again he didnt look impressed but he went with it, then after 10 minutes he said " im not happy with the situation im phoning for recovery" now no matter what i said he went and did it anyway, so i asked if theyd recover it to my house as i dont want it in a crappy garage for days on end, to which the copper said NO theyll take it to there garage so they make sure they get paid, the recovery guy showed up and gave me all of a tiny business card which just had a couple of phone numbers on. i rang this morning to see how much im looking at to get it home and they said its £180 for recovery and is £12 a DAY storage so the bill so far £217 (not sure where the extra £25 came from ???).
Basically is that me stuffed now to cough up and get my car back? i dont want the insurance sorting it as the damage is repairable doing it myself for £100ish whereas the insurance excess is £350 so is cheaper this way.

As i didnt want there recovery and it was the copper who wasnt happy to wait is there anything i can do or do i need to pay up ? only ask as i dont have £10 to my name let alone £200 so its just going to build and build :-(
