Photo card recover help PLEASEEEEEEEEE

Hello All,

I have just gone to use my memery card and my rubbish old laptop suddenly changed the files onto something wierd instead of being dcm files they are a random gibberish of letters and symbles and i cant open the file?
I have been online at card recovery and downloaded one which showed all the photos are still on the card and recoverable but I have to pay $50 to save them to my pc :-(
does anyone know if I can recover them for free? or is my only opetion to pay these internet companys for a one of use of their softwear?
im on a different laptop now so it shouldnt happen again once ive got the photos back.

Thanks for any info in advance

  • Dear Travelchick,

One of the best things I have found for recovering files in your situation is Photo Rec. It is Open Source, and consequently a free download.

You can get it from here, http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

Download it to your machine, extract the folder from the zip file, then double click the Win folder followed by the file photorec_win application file.

If you need any further assistance PM me and I have a few other options as well for you to try.

    I hope this helps.

    Simon.
  • awww Simon thats fantastic, thank you I will try that now and let you know how i get one :-)

  • I never had any luck with Recuva, but I have had very good results with Minitool Power Data Recovery. The current version (6.6) has a 1GB limit on free recovery, but older versions are really free.
Version 6.6 is available here - if you have less than 1GB to recover. I believe you can recover more, but only 1GB at a time.
    Version 6.0 is available here.
