HELP! Newly single mum in need of a house!

Having recently split from my partner i have unfortunatlyfound myself and my young daughter back at my parents house.

I am desperate to rent a small house but i am finding information very confussing and conflicting.

Currently whilst searching for work i am on income support (I was living abroad so no job here yet) Through income support i could claim housing benefit and council tax benefit. However! I am planning on returning to work for around 20-25 hours.

This means i can come of income support and on to working families tax credits. Now this is were i am getting confused as the lovely people at my local jobcentre and those on the phone are useless!

Would i still get housing benefit and council tax help????!????!!!!

I am soooooo unsure on how i am ever going to be able to afford a place of my own to bring up my daughter.

Any advice would be great. Especially from anyone who has been in a similar possition.

Thanks all x:beer:

  • if you are single with child you could as k the council for a property, while you are on IS you will get housing benefit and council tax but will have to pay water rates which will only be about £6 a week when you return to work you will get working tax and child tax and depending on how much you earn fo r25 hrs you may not get any help with council tax or rent, i returned to work for 16 hrs and got about "2.00 a week for council tax and that was all. jsut make sure you have a little saved up for the unexpected when returning to work as not all your benefits and tax credits will be sorted out straight away so make sure you have something to live on for a few weeks. citizens advice was quite good when i returned to work

Good advice, get yourself down to your local Citizens Advice Bureau, they will have all that information on hand.
  • Hi

I am in a similar situation but work full time. I asked my local council to do an estimate which they happily did for me by email to the benefits department. In my area it is very expensive, the average 2 bed costs £800 a month! So even though i work full time, as a single mum paying for childcare there is just no way i could afford a house without it.
