Washing Machine needs new pump - cost please?

Does anyone know roughly how much I should expect to pay for a new drain pump fitting to my Zanussi washing machine?

I have a chap coming out tomorrow morning to investigate the problem and I am pretty sure it will need a new pump. I have googled a new pump and they are about £20+ but I am wondering how much he should charge, of course depending on how long it should take.

A rough idea would be great since I have no idea and dont really want to get ripped off.

Thanks in advance

get a quote for the job before he starts work. if you dont like it tell him no thx. ive heard some horror stories re washing machine spares/repairs.
i may be wrong but i think its unlikely he will supply the pump at less than full price.
seen pumps for as little as 7 quid on ebay and the www.
anyone with a little diy skill can change one.

    ask/bribe the chap next door?
    Get some gorm.

It should take him around 20 mins to change it. Even I can do it in this time and I have the dexterity of a dinasour!

  • Take care that the call out charge is not excessive ! This could be much more than the cost of fitting the part. As ormus says find out exactly what the charges are especially for time. If he charges by the half hour, make sure that the cup of tea that you offer is after the final price is agreed

Thankyou everybody who posted. It does seem relatively easy to do, I would have a go myself but the damn thing is so heavy to move around, I dont think I would be strong enough to turn it over.

Cant ask the chap next door, his wife doesnt like me, I think she thinks I am trying to steal him - I am not, honest.

Washing machine man just rang to say he wont be able to make it until tomorrow, his van broke down.

  • The pump usually blocks before it fails, there is a trap you can empty which is stopping the pump emptying the machine.

I cleaned out the trap, there was nothing much in there. I had to use the little pipe to let out the water (which took hours) so I could open the door to get the clothes out.
