Shared Ownership help!!!

  • We were very lucky with being allocated our SO. I found the development after a link to the homebuy website from my work intranet, went on the website and noticed they were building some SO on a development that I liked the look of anyway which I hadn't been aware of having SO properties on. Sent off for details which I received. In the meantime (space of a few days) I went to an Open Day for Shared Ownership and handed in copies of payslips etc as the HA had a stand there and arranged a viewing for two days later and put down a deposit a couple of days later. In this time I also registered on the Council housing list whcih we weren't previously on. For my particular development you don't seem to have to be a keyworker or in social housing need etc so has been quite good, but then they have built a lot of SO on developments in recent months round here so that might be why they weren't so fussy!

Being accepted by the HAs were the easy part for us.

As there was obviously a shortage of suitable SO properties in the areas we looked, it took a while before we were allocated one.

We did turn one down (after it being offerred to us). In fact we were quite near the signing contracts (solicitors) stage but pulled out because it just wasn't right. And I am so glad we did.

Our new house, is a resale (so older), but so much bigger than new builds. It isn't so expensive, and the rental on a resale seems to be much less than on new builds. We only pay £115 / month, on our 50% / £75K not owned.
  • Myself and my boyfriend are considering SO, we live in Blackpool and live in a 3 bed house with his parents (there are 5 adults living here). His parents are coming up to retirement and want to downsize. This means we'll be flying the nest at some point before they can sell. We only earn £27k combined and I work in the NHS as a cardiographer.

I filled in an online form on plumlife, is there anybody else in this area who we need to apply to?

Sorry, I don't live near you, so don't have a clue.

Perhaps get hold of the council and ask for a list of HA with SO properties. It may also assist you if you registerd with the council.
