Cash machines

Just a warning for everyone. I recently went to a Halifax Cash Machine I had previously used. It was outside a branch. I was puzzled when it came up with requests of which language I wanted to use. Did not see anything about it being a charging ATM. When I got my bank statement I had been charged £3. I have used this machine in the past with no charging. They have machines inside also. I was thrown as the language questions came up. I do not go to that machine on a regular basis. I havn't been back to the area since to check but I was annoyed.

Did you use your credit card instead of your debit card? You often get asked to choose a language with credit cards, and you will always pay a fee.

I am not aware of any ATMs that would charge as much as £3 for using a UK issued debit card, and no UK bank branded ATM will charge at all for debit card use. If your card is not a credit card, as suggested by EarthBoy, or one issued by an overseas bank, and you are sure it is a Halifax ATM, then complain to your own bank who will take it up with Halifax.

There was a post a few weeks back about one bank's (BoS, RBS? - can't remember) ATMs starting to charge fees to UK debit card holders. It was an error and at least those who spotted it were refunded.

    Maybe it's a recurrence.
