I have a vauxhall astra 1.7 TD and was insured with Kwik Fit insurance, i had a letter off kwik fit saying that my policy had been cancelled and when i asked why, they wouldnt tell me a direct answer. As a result of them cancelling my policy i've had to pay out £603.76 which has left me considerably skint. i was wondering if insurance companies can do this to someone and get away with it and why they won't give me a direct answer.

No.
They need to advise you they are going to cancel, beforehand, as laid out in their t&c's.
They also have terms on what they can charge when they do.
The way to progress it is to write a fromal complaint, and if they don't respond, refer it to the FOS.
Post on the insurance board if you need more help, and if you can provide any more info as to why you think they may have cancelled.0 -

More info required to give you proper advice.
eg. Is this a mid term cancellation, have you made any changes (new car/job/moved house etc), missed any instalments, or have they not offered to renew at the end of the policy year etc)0 -
