Putting engineered wood flooring on uneven floor

Hi,

Just hoping to get a few opinions on what we should do about putting our engineered wood flooring down..

Some of our floorboards, mostly in our bay window are pretty uneven.. I spoke to our builder who was doing some jobs for us to get his opinion what we should do about putting our 13.5ml eng wood flooring down and he said, as we are on a budget and don't really want to go pulling up floorboards and replacing ect, he would recommend we put down a layer of 9mm plywood accross the whole floor and screwed it down to even things out and then put the wood flooring on top of that.

My partner is going to be doing the work with the help of a friend but his friend doesn't think the layer of plywood is necessary and it will raise the floor too much and look odd..

I think we should put the plywood down (especially as we've already brought it!) but I'm no expert so I'd really like some opinions as to what we should do, please?

Thanks in advance :)

  • How much money is your builder making from you laying the floor? If nothing, then he has given you an opinion on what a builder would do under the circumstances. What trade is your friend Qualified in?

Only you can make the decision

Thanks for your reply :) The builder isn't making any money from it so I was inclined to go with his advice, as the friend isn't in the trade so can't be classed as an expert but with one person telling me to do it and another telling me not to I wanted to be sure I was making the right choice :)

our engineered floor is laid on top of our old floorboards, but with a layer of underlay in order to take up any uneven surface.

I suppose it depends on how uneven your floor is. Our engineered wood is by Kahrs. If you have a google, they have really detailed installation instructions on their website givinge details of all sorts of different subfloors & what is required.

The underlay was bought at the same time as the engineered boards & is totally different from carpet underlay.

    Hope this helps
