Free School Meals

  • This scheme ended in June 2010.

    Good! lol! Sorry didn't realise.
  • I remember when I looked into it (cause all kids from single parent families get free School meals, Free School trips and everything paid for .. right?)

I think the form said if your income is less than 16k you qualified, but then when you read further down if you were in receipt of WFTC you didn't qualify.

But I tell you what made me even madder!!!!

Last year my secretary at work handed me a newspaper article saying low income families could apply for a computer and year's internet access paid for. I downloaded the form started filling it in then realised the magic WFTC wiped out the entitlement

So I passed the form to my friend who has 2 kids and hasn't worked for over 10 Years.... she was delighted with the £500 PC World voucher she received to buy a shiny new lap top and BT came round to fit the free internet :(

I couldn't afford a new PC in a million years!

I know they ran the same scheme in sheffield and once again lost out would have come in very handy it has taken me the best part of a year to save up for a laptop.

Makes you sick, you try to do the right thing and set an example to your children that going out to work is the right thing and supporting yourselves. I have worked since leaving school at 16 the only time I had off was to have my children and then I went back after my maternity leave. Grrrrr:mad:.

As things stand at the moment not working and claiming CTC, JSA, HB and CTB we would be better off.

    rant over LOL!!
    £365.00 in 365 day challenge = £5.00/£365.00:rolleyes:

Wasn't this the scheme that was finished very quickly when the current government came to power? (the dates fit quite nicely -lol). I knew of 2 families who qualified and got one - however they already had internet connection and a pc/laptop! It just gave them an additional one.
  • There is a new scheme now where anyone on low income/benefits can get a pc or laptop, but they have to pay a small amount.

These refurbs are ancient with specs like my 5 year old desktop, its most certainly not as good as the new but lower spec new ones that were offered free to benefit claimants a couple of years ago, if you think they are you know nothing about computors and definatly nothing about finance as you can pick up much better for less (and you never get better than the free deal offered to claimants before) and anyone can buy these pieces of crud but most people have far to much sense.
  • I am actually on one of them free ones now lol! just a samsung lappy. Are the refurbs that bad really? I want a new laptop, but im going through DELL but was going to get the kids a new proper PC off them. Glad you mentioned it! Will get OH to build them one now!!! x ta!!

But dont you see, you are doing the right thing and setting a good example to your children by going out to work. You are showing them the positivity of a good work ethic, that you are taking responsibility for the upkeep of your family instead of taking hand outs. You will pass this on to them and this can only be a good thing.

All I can say is good for you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Is this recent? I tried before and was turned down for free school meals because I received WTC and CTC, but my income is way below the quoted figure.

It may actually have been the CTC that cancelled it out, because I remember thinking it stupid, that anyone earning £16000 or less with a kid will normally get CTC.
