What do I need to connect my Wii to the internet

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere. I tried to search but couldn't find anything.

I have just bought a new Acer T180 PC and my son would like to connect his Wii to the internet.

Unfortunately I have no idea where to start or what I need.

I tried to use the Wireless Network Setup Wizard on the PC. I copied the network settings onto a flash drive (well my MP3 player) as it asked. It then tells me to plug the flash drive into my wireless access point and then each device then back in the computer.

What/where is the "wireless access point"? Do I need to buy a router or something? If so can anybody recommend the best one to get.

Do you have a wireless network?

The Wii has a wireless adaptor built in so all you need is a wireless network to connect it to.

Depending on what internet connection you have will depend on the type of router you need if you already have a router you could just buy a wireless access point.

If you dont have any of the bits needed to go wireless then the Wii cant get wireless internet access.

Eh -sorry I am really thick when it comes to things like this!

I would probably say no that I don't have a wireless network but only because I have no idea how to create one. What should I be looking for? Would I need something plugged into the back of my modem?

I connect to the internet through a Cable Modem 351000 box supplied by NTL. Does that make sense?
  • actually we use a netgear wgr 615 version 5 this attached to the pc provides the acces point for the wii . all you then do is set the router up there are very good guides on this very board . Rember to use security .Once done on the will menu serch for the acces point .put in your wep key wich you set up on the router .The wii scans and finds the router . read here on wifi http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=121274
  • If all you have is an NTL cable modem then you dont have a wireless network ignore the wizards you have been playing with.

You need to buy a wireless router with a 4 port hub/switch built in. PC world link You can get them for as little as about £30, I have used loads of different ones dlink, belkin, USR, Edimax and zyxel without problems I found netgear to be poor. Linksys are really good too. but you need to remember the network ports on it or you will end up buying a wireless adaptor for the pc, your PC has a wired network addaptor in it so you may as well use that.

connect the ntl modem to the router WAN port the PC to one of the 4 ports, configure the router witha name (SSID), wireless security (WEP) giving the router a password (KEY) to keep it simple it is enough to put of most peope from trying to get in to your network.

You then get the Wii to connect to the router, I did ours a bit back so will need to look again but if you have any problems post back.
