Swapping car - reasonable expectation?

  • It's a 40 litre tank (apparently) and I do about 18000 -19000 miles per year. I've tried moneysaving tips like decluttering the car, not filling up completely (which is a pain going to the garage every 3 or 4 days) etc etc and that, if I'm lucky, gets me the 370 miles but more often than not due to work (essential car user and I'm not going to debate anything on that point) I can't do those things (such as having to carry equipment).

So you're getting between about 35 and 42 to the gallon as is, for overall use including carrying stuff.

That's really not all that bad for real-life use (not great, but not bad). Bear in mind that if you managed to find something that genuinely averaged 50mpg that would save you around £550 a year in fuel compared to 40mpg. So put your £500 cash in the tank, save yourself the loan interest (about £50 for the year), and stick with a car you know you can trust to do that sort of mileage ;)

Incidentally, driving style can make a much bigger difference to fuel consumption than weight in the car. In fact, weight in the car only really uses fuel when you're braking. If you get in the habit of easing up a little earlier, and aiming to only use your brakes to actually bring yourself to a stop, most of the energy used to accelerate the extra weight is given back while you're slowing :)

Those tips give miniscule savings and are a waste of time.

do a brim to brim to get the tank size and MPG.

How are you getting paid for the business miles?

Pay back will be quite short with the right choice of car.

MIght be worth a longer term plan spend slightly more to get a much better car and plan the payback form the weekly fuel savings so you don't use up any salary and less savings.

if you can get a goo
